Over a career spanning seven decades, Peggy Lee paved the way for countless female singers. She accomplished something that few of her male counterparts even attempted; she wrote songs. Her compositions and recordings, including It’s a Good Day, I Don’t Know Enough About You, and I Love Being Here with You, can be heard today in a wide range of television shows and feature films. Many contemporary female singers, such as Adele, Billie Eilish, and Diana Krall, often cite Peggy Lee as an inspiration. Known for her elegance, subtlety, and captivating tone, Lee saw herself primarily as a communicator whose favorite medium was music. Although she possessed the ability to belt out a song, she preferred to deliver a lyric “softly, with feeling.”
