Wes Lewis is a PhD candidate in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at Yale and a recipient of the Mellon Foundation’s 2023-2024 Artist Corps grant. He is the principle saxophonist of the Yale Jazz Ensemble, and actively performs with several groups including his own quartet and the collective Trance Macabre. Wes grew up in Buffalo NY and attended the University of Rochester for his undergraduate degree. Since moving to New Haven in 2019, Wes has performed alongside the Mingus Big Band, as well as with Jessie (“Cheese”) Hameen II, Brian Q. Torff, Wali Ali, Ryan Sands, and Zwelakhe-Duma Bell Le Pere. He has studied with multiple Grammy award winning musicians, including Wayne Escoffery and Abraham Burton.

Derek Lewis is a jazz pianist based in Brooklyn, NY. Following his upbringing in Buffalo, he attended SUNY Fredonia and then The New School for his undergraduate degree in music, and has studied with several legendary figures including Buster Williams, Reggie Workman, and Joanne Brackeen. Derek has performed at an array of established venues, including Smalls Jazz Club, Zinc Bar, and the Bern International Jazz Festival. Currently, Derek can be found performing regularly in New York City and the greater NYC area, both as a sideman and with his own trio.

John Bacon, Jr., percussionist and composer, teaches percussion and Jazz at SUNY Fredonia, percussion at UB and maintains a home teaching studio. He holds a PhD in Music Composition from SUNY at Buffalo and a MM in Percussion Performance from Fredonia. His music has been performed by an eclectic array of musicians, including The Amherst Saxophone Quartet, Leroy Jenkins, the New Jazz Orchestra of Buffalo, the New York New Music Ensemble and the UB Percussion Ensemble. Performance credits include Lester Bowie, Roswell Rudd, Bobby Previte, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Bobby Militello, Star People, the Buffalo Jazz Collective and the Buffalo Jazz Composers Workshop.

Woodwind player Dave Schiavone, in addition to performing with the Amherst Saxophone Quartet, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and his own group (the Dave Schiavone Quartet, aka DSQ), has toured both nationally and internationally with the bands of Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, and Doc Severinson. He has also performed with artists Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole, Harry Connick Jr., Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra Jr., Kenny Rogers, Maureen McGovern, David Clayton Thomas, Mel Lewis, Don Menza, Louis Bellson, Gap Mangione, and Aretha Franklin, to name a few.

Sabu Adeyola is a bass player well known for his work in the studio and in concert with pianist Ahmad Jamal. Born in Buffalo and educated at UB, Adeyola was a protége of Charles Mingus, appeared on recordings by Pat Metheny and Gary Burton, and has performed at venues around the world with such major artists as Abbey Lincoln, Charlie Byrd, Donald Byrd, Dexter Gordon, “Big” Joe Turner, Mal Waldron, Grover Washington Jr., and Cassandra Wilson.
